- Title
The Thoreau Ideal as a Unifying Thread in the Conservation Movement.
- Authors
Child, Matthew F.
- Abstract
This opinion piece argues that numerous species once thought to be integral to maintaining valued ecosystem services are not actually needed, a revelation that negates the concept of environmental economics within the realm of biodiversity. The author uses native bees as pollinators by California farmers to illustrate his point, stating that setting aside land to promote the diversity of wild bees incorporates a cost that is higher than importing bees from an urban locale.
