- Abstract
Introduction: The prevalence of functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGDs) in Colombian school children is unknown, despite being prevalent in pediatrics. They are important because of school and work absences. To determine the Objective: prevalence of FGDs in school children of Public Educational Institution (PEI) in Cali, Colombia and identify possible associations. Methodology: Prevalence study in 544 school children. Were considered sociodemographic, family and clinical variables. Statistical analysis included estimation of the proportion of children with FGDs and corresponding 95% CI, %, percentiles, mean, medians and other descriptive measures with their corresponding standard deviations and ranges; univariate analysis; possible occurrence of association between the variables, Fisher exact test with a p value <0.05 significant, two-tailed, and multiple logistic regression analysis. The prevalence for FGDs Results: was 18.2%, with 12.5±2.6 years old. Predominated in: female gender, eutrophic, more than 1 brother and sister, separated or divorced parents and without intrafamily FGDs. There was > present FGDs have separated or divorced parents (OR=1.58 95% CI 1.04- 2.42 p=0.032) and < in girls (OR=0.56 95% CI 0.37 to 0.84 p=0.006) and. The variables that best explained the presence of FGDs were gender and have separated or divorced parents. The prevalence of Conclusion: FGDs in school children between 8 and 18 years of PEI from Cali, Colombia was 18.2%, with the main FGDs, functional constipation and irritable bowel syndrome, with possible risk factors the gender and present separated or divorced parents.
