- Abstract
"Gendered Places: The Landscape of Local Gender Norms Across the United States" by William J. Scarborough explores the variations in gender norms at a local level in the United States. Scarborough argues that national-level data is insufficient to account for these variations and uses representative data from multiple sources to identify four major spheres in which gender norms can be assessed: women's advancement, public sphere gender essentialism, intensive mothering, and private sphere gender essentialism. The book contributes to the literature by offering one of the first accounts of local gender norms in the United States and discussing the consequences of different gender norms on local culture and material outcomes. While the book provides a complex set of theoretical frameworks and data, it could have further addressed the interrelationships between the four dimensions of gender cultures and acknowledged the inclusion of non-binary identities and experiences. Overall, "Gendered Places" is an important contribution to the study of gender in the United States and provides valuable insights for students in sociology and gender studies.
