- Title
Activism from the Margins Filipino Marriage Migrants in Australia.
- Authors
BONIFACIO, GLENDA LYNNA ANNE TIBE
- Abstract
The article discusses activism by Filipino marriage migrants in Australia. According to the author, global migration of Filipinos is highly gendered and the migration trajectories are reflective of the restructuring of the international economy, which demands cheap labor in the service industries. Topics include the high percentage of Filipino women in Australia who are mail-order brides and the activism of Filipino marriage migrants, such as their participation in immigrant women’s organizations. The author examines the activism by Filipino women as a form of citizenship practice and argues that racialized marriage migrants are a demonstration of lived activism in which the quotidian of their lives is fostered by community interaction or participation in immigrant women’s groups.
