- Abstract
The article presents a discussion of the usage of the rhetoric of brotherhood in the 18th century to prepare young men to go to war. The traditional conception of the 18th-century usage of the concept of brotherhood is discussed, noting that the Enlightenment and 18th-century French society made use of the concept to promote and encourage feelings of tolerance, responsibility, and loyalty. Representations of brotherly rivalry, fighting, and hostility from the 18th century are examined, noting the ways that brotherhood is a concept that existed in 18th-century military conflict.
