- Abstract
The article explores evolving concepts underlying the pathogenesis of type 1 diabetes. Particular focus is given to autoimmunity as the formative cause of diabetes during the 1980s, as well as efforts to preserve C-peptide production in clinical trials. Topics discussed include human immune response, disease subtypes, and inflammatory process in the pancreas. The role of coxsackievirus in the pathogenesis of type 1 diabetes and human pancreatic islets are also mentioned.
