- Abstract
Executive functions (EF) are considered as a set of cognitive processes that facilitate the achievement of a predetermined goal, allowing control and self-monitoring of one's own thinking. The aim of this study was to describe executive functioning in preschool children through a descriptive and correlational scientific and technological research. The purposive sample consisted of 34 preschool students from a private school in the city of Santiago de Cali. The assessment instrument implemented was the Neuropsychological Assessment Battery for Preschoolers (BANPE), designed for the Spanish-speaking population. This instrument presents adequate levels of sensitivity to detect age-related changes. The results showed statistically significant correlations (p-value<0.05) between the variables Working Memory and Inhibition (C.C.=3.85), Working Memory and Planning (C.C.=0.576), and Inhibition and Planning (C.C.=0.444). It is concluded that the correlations established in the present work show that working memory and inhibition are the first cognitive processes to emerge, because the correct development of other cognitive processes such as cognitive flexibility, planning and risk-benefit processing depends on them.
