- Abstract
This document discusses the standardization of pediatric serum phosphate reference intervals in Wales using an indirect data-mining approach. The study was prompted by the need to maintain serum phosphate levels within the age-specific reference interval for children receiving burosumab therapy for X-linked hypophosphataemia (XLH). The researchers used data from the laboratory information management system to establish age-related reference distributions for phosphate levels. The resulting reference intervals were compared to existing guidelines and were found to be significantly lower in the youngest age groups but aligned with adolescents. The study highlights the importance of using locally specific reference intervals and the utility of indirect data-mining methods in establishing these intervals.
