Proustian Masquerades: “I" or “not-I"?
- Authors
Moorjani, Angela
- Abstract
Masquerade and the narrative je in Marcel Proust's A la recherche du temps perdu have long intrigued exegetes. Revisiting the peekaboo with the “I" and the “not-I", the cachecache with the name Marcel, and onomastic masquerades, this essay draws on psychoanalytic insights, developments in narratology, and ongoing studies of Proust's manuscript notebooks and typescripts to shed new light on the writer's paradoxical projections into his novel. Ultimately, it is a plea to continue to query Proust's ludic paradoxes despite attempts to declare them resolved.
