- Abstract
Objectives: To verify the gross motor development (MD) of preterm infants, assessed from 4 to 8 months of corrected age (CA), participants of an early intervention program (EIP). In addition, to compare the MD of infants studied with the reference standards of Canadian scale, Alberta Infant Motor Scale (AIMS). Methods: Twelve preterm were assessed monthly from 4 to 8 months CA by the AIMS. Results: By AIMS classification, 75% of infants had suspected MD at 4 and 5 months CA and 59% at 6 months CA; 50% presented typical development and 42% suspected at 7 and 8 months CA. The comparison of the MD of the infants with the normative standards of the AIMS showed that infants studied had motor delay regarding to infants of the AIMS sample at 4, 5 and 6 months CA. Conclusion: The preterm studied, except one, showed satisfactory MD, according to AIMS, at the end of the study. Was observed an increase in the motor repertoire that may have been facilitated by the EIP without disregarding the process of maturation of the central nervous system. Regarding the reference standards of Canadian scale used, the infants presented lower MD in the first three months.
