- Abstract
RESUMEN Giardia lamblia es un parásito flagelado de la familia hexamitidae, descrito por primera vez en 1681 por van Leewenhoek, pero se atribuye a Lambl en 1859 la descripción detallada.La importancia como patógeno para el hombre fue reconocida hace 4 décadas (1950).La distribución del parásito es universal, en México resulta ser el patógeno intestinal más común con una frecuencia de presentación general del 19%.Las manifestaciones de enfermedad en los niños dependen del número de quistes ingeridos, cepa del parásito, inmunidad del huésped y los cambios morfológicos y de absorción intestinal que provoca.El cuadro clínico es florido ya que puede manifestarse con: episodios de diarrea aguda o crónica, hiporexia, dolor abdominal, malabsorción intestinal, síndrome anémico y en algunos casos se ha descrito dolor ocular y artralgias, reacciones alérgicas y urticaria.La identificación mediante estudio coproparasitoscópico puede verse afectada por uso de antidiarreicos, antiácidos antibióticos laxantes y medios de contraste baritado, por lo que estos agentes deben ser suspendidos al menos 10 días antes del estudio.En los últimos años se han desarrollado métodos de laboratorio de mayor precisión tales como: hilo duodenal (entero-test), determinación de anticuerpos contra trofozoítos (IgM) y copro-antígenos (ELISA) con sensibilidad y especificidad entre 94-97%.Para el tratamiento se incluyen los siguientes fármacos: metronidazol, tinidazol, onidazol, furazolidona, quinarcina, albendazol y sitaxozanide.En este trabajo se ofrece una revisión de los aspectos clínicos y terapéuticos de esta parasitosis en el niño.PALABRAS CLAVE: Giardiasis, en niños.ABSTRACT Giardia lamblia is an flagellate...
