- Abstract
Horses harbour a large number of parasite species. The paper describes the prevalence of helminth species in horses from 10 localities of Timiş. County, western Romania: Lovrin, Variaş, Fibiş, Pişchia, Dumbrăviţa, Giulvăz, Gătaia, Buziaş, Belin and Făget. A total of 104 horses (15 foals, 22 yearlings and 67 adults) were sampled in order to establish the parasite spectrum. Faecal samples were processed by McMaster technique. All horses (100%) were parasitized, and five types of helminthes were identified. Digestive strongyles were found in 85.57% of horses, roundworms (Parascaris equorum) in 28.84%, threadworms (Strongyloides westeri) in 9.61%, pinworms (Oxyuris equf) in 20.19%, and tapeworms (Anoplocephala spp.) in 19.23%, respectively. At least two helminth genera were found in most of the individuals.
