- Abstract
This article is a review of the book "Adam Smith's System: A Re-Interpretation Inspired by Smith's Lectures on Rhetoric, Game Theory, and Conjectural History" by Andreas Ortmann and Benoît Walraevens. The book offers a new interpretation of Adam Smith's economic thought, focusing on his conception of rhetoric and game theory. The authors argue that Smith's social science can be better understood through the lens of game theory. The book includes chapters on various topics, including Smith's critique of the mercantile system, the role of self-command in moral behavior, and the application of game theory to economic behavior and institutions. While the book provides valuable insights, the reviewer expresses skepticism about some of the interpretations and argues that game theory may not be a comprehensive framework for understanding Smith's thought.
