- Authors
Sheares, Constance Alwin
- Abstract
The article discusses the evolution of batik in Southeast Asia. The etymology of the word "batik" suggests that it comes from the Javanese word "tik" which pertains to droplet or dot. It is defined as an art of applying dyes unto a woven cloth that gives credit to its output which is also called batik. It unveils that batik was first used by Chinese and later by Japanese in the early centuries. It provides information on how the process has been practiced in India, Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore.
