- Title
The Succession of Sots, or Fools and Their Fathers.
- Authors
Astington, John H.
- Abstract
The article discusses comedic actors in the 17th century in England and how they were apprenticed and hired for work on stage. Richard Tarlton was among the first to study clowning, and he apprenticed Robert Armin, who joined an acting company after Tarlton's death and was successful on the stage. Comedic actors were relatively independent, the article says, and more professional training for becoming a fool character became available in the Jacobean period.
