- Abstract
The article discusses the orchestral work "The Planets" by composer Gustav Holst, which was composed of seven suites dedicated to seven of the Solar System's planets. The author notes the impact of astrology on Holst's composition and analyzes each suite according to the astrological attributes of each planet. The tempo of and instrumentation of each movement is explained. Particular focus is given to the ways in which "The Planets" has been incorporated into various mass media ventures, including recordings of the work and a video package featuring the work released by the Adler Planetarium in Chicago, Illinois.
