- Abstract
The article critiques the film "12 Years a Slave," directed by Steve McQueen and starring Chiwetel Ejiofor, Paul Dano and Benedict Cumberbatch. Particular focus is given to the film's depiction of the social conditions of the African American Solomon Northup's life during the mid 19th century, including in regard to his transition from a being a free African American to becoming a slave.
