- Abstract
An article on the history of Austria's borders between 1945 and 1995, when it joined the European Union, is presented. The author reflects on the development of an Austrian national identity independent of Germany, along with providing historical perspectives on the independence of Austria. The development of a uniquely Austrian culture, independent of German influence, became an increasingly important goal for the Austrian government following World War II as well. Shifts in public opinion of the war are also analyzed.
