- Abstract
The article discusses the history of Christianity in China. It focuses on the historical perspective of the Jesuit missionaries and Chinese converts to Christianity in the 17th century, which was influenced by the discovery of the Xi'an Christian stele, also known as the Nestorian stone. This eighth century monument recorded the existence of Chinese Christians during the Tang dynasty. Various historiographical approaches to understanding the significance of the monument and its inscriptions are described and analyzed.
