- Authors
Bassett, Jane
- Abstract
The article discusses four bronze portrait busts by Italian baroque sculptor Gian Lorenzo Bernini, including two busts of Pope Urban VIII, one of Pope Paul V, and one of Pope Gregory XV. The author describes Bernini's practice of using foundries to cast his bronzes and compares the busts of Paul V and Gregory XV, both commissioned by Cardinal Scipione Borghese and cast by Sebastiano Sebastiani, suggesting that both were creating using the indirect lost wax technique. The author also examines the portraits of Urban VIII and discusses the possibility that both were cast from the same model. Also discussed is the commissioning of the portraits.
