Evidence-based claw trimming for dairy cattle.
- Authors
Bell, N. J.
- Abstract
The author discusses the various methods of claw trimming of high yielding housed dairy cows, particularly the Dutch Five Step technique. Among the steps are matching length and balancing weight distribution in the other claw of the foot, creating a concavity within the middle of the sole, and removing loose horn and ridges at problematic sites. Also cited are some benefits of claw trimming like improved grip, better gait, and better recovery of the painful foot lesions.
