- Title
Open abdomen in secondary peritonitis: time for closure.
- Authors
Slade, Dominic A J
- Abstract
The article discusses the use of the open abdomen technique in the management of secondary peritonitis. The open abdomen technique involves leaving the abdomen open after surgery to treat severe and intractable peritonitis, allowing for drainage. However, there is limited evidence supporting its use in peritonitis, and the benefits are questionable. Studies have shown that closing the abdomen at the earliest opportunity reduces the risk of complications such as fistulation and hernia. The article suggests that the majority of abdomens should be closed, and the open abdomen technique should be considered a temporary measure.
