- Title
Donald Trump's Assault on the Wages of American Workers.
- Authors
WITTNER, LAWRENCE
- Abstract
This article discusses how Donald Trump, during his presidency, undermined the wages of American workers. Despite claiming to have produced a "blue-collar boom" in workers' wages, Trump blocked raises and imposed wage reductions. For example, he vetoed the Raise the Wage Act, which would have gradually increased the federal minimum wage to $15 per hour. Trump's Department of Labor also rolled back planned wage increases for millions of workers by restricting eligibility for overtime pay. Additionally, Trump canceled a scheduled pay raise for federal employees and implemented policies that made it harder for workers to hold employers accountable for wage violations. However, some of Trump's attempts to reduce wages, such as allowing employers to pocket workers' tips, were unsuccessful due to congressional intervention. Overall, the policies of the Trump administration depressed the wages of American workers.
