- Abstract
Technological advances in the field of molecular biology during the past decades allow for the scrutiny of tumor derived biomolecules, including circulating tumor DNA fragments at an unprecedented level. The approach is referred to as liquid biopsy, whose main advantages include the minimally invasive nature, the possibility to simultaneously analyze tumor DNA derived from different anatomical locations (spatial heterogeneity), the ability to detect clonal evolution and longitudinally monitor treatment related molecular responses (temporal heterogeneity) in patients receiving antitumor therapy. Recently, several studies were published interrogating the utility of the approach in solid tumors, which is already incorporated into the diagnostic guidelines of non-small cell lung cancer and colorectal cancer. Based on the literature, liquid biopsy has the potential to determine prognosis, to identify predictive biomarkers prior to specific treatments and to monitor therapeutic efficacy and minimal residual disease. Here, we review the potential applications of liquid biopsy in the field of solid tumors.
