- Abstract
Every year in Mexico 2,625,056 infants are born. One out of ten is premature and weighs less than the average. Pregnancy produces anatomical, physiological and biochemical changes in the maternal organism. There is evidence that during pregnancy there is major risk of obtaining periodontal disease, it has been demonstrated that the biofilm and its products are the main etiological factor for periodontal disease. The hormonal changes during pregnancy, diet and poor oral hygiene lead to oral flora changes; all the above mentioned factors affect the periodontium. It is well known that periodontitis influences the term time and the weight of the product. In this study the periodontal status of 25 pregnant women between 16 and 42 years old, with 24 to 40 weeks of pregnancy. The study was carried out at Centro de Asistencia Proayuda Familiar in Atizopan Estado de Mexico. A prevalence of periodontitis was that obtain 84% the pregnant women and there were no important variations in the term or the weight of the products.
