- Abstract
Melanoma is a severe type of skin cancer, with multiple pathogenic factors, one the most significant being the exposure to ultraviolet radiation. Primary prevention combined with secondary prevention may decrease the incidence, the mortality and the morbidity in this type of cancer. Primary prevention includes the reduction of melanoma risk factors and the most important and potentially modifiable environmental risk factor is the frequent and intense exposure to ultraviolet rays. Secondary prevention or early melanoma diagnosis include two methods: skin self-examination and medical examination (including total body examination and dermatoscopy of suspicious lesions). Family physicians play an important role in melanoma screening and its early detection, because patients are consulted most frequently in primary care services. Family physicians can increase patients' awareness on the risk factors for the development of melanoma or other skin cancers, can assess the individual risk, can teach the patient to self-examine and to ask for dermatological care in case of suspicious nevi or skin lesions.
