- Abstract
An essay is presented on the poem "Christmas-Eve" by Victorian poet Robert Browning. The essay explores the concept of extravagance as a poetic feature, the irony of the poem in relation to its religious subject matter and the poem's discussion of the contemporary issues of industrialization and religious crisis of belief. The essay addresses the apocalyptic references in the poem, including the poet's comparison of issues of the Victorian era to the New Testament Book of Revelation.
