Remembrance of Things Past: Literary Annuals' Self-Historicization.
- Authors
Mourão, Manuela
- Abstract
The essay discusses literary annuals, or illustrated anthologies often given as gifts in 19th-century England. The author suggests that literary annuals acted as a form of English literary cultural heritage and a symbol of the literary transition from Romantic to Victorian literature. Other topics discussed include the role of annuals in the formation of 19th-century middle-class identity, 19th-century attitudes about aesthetics, and a poem by L.E.L. in the 1829 annual "The Keepsake."
