William Morris' "Golden Wings" as a Poetic Response to the "Delicate Sentiment" of Tennyson's "Mariana".
- Authors
SALTZMAN, BENJAMIN A.
- Abstract
The article offers a comparative critique of the poems "Golden Wings" by William Morris and "Mariana" by Alfred, Lord Tennyson. Particular focus is given to the women characters of the poem, Morris' Jehane du Castel and Tennyson's Mariana, as reflections of femmes fatales literature characters. The author also examines reasons why he believes Morris' poem is a response to Tennyson's in regards to his depiction of Victorian-era women.
