- Abstract
The article offers poetry criticism of the sonnet sequence "Female Characters of Scripture," by Victorian poet Felicia Hemans, published in the collection "Scenes and Hymns of Life, With Other Religious Poems." It addresses Hemans' depiction of female biblical characters including Miriam, the Virgin Mary, and Ruth. Poems discussed include "The Song of Miriam," "Mary at the Feet of Christ," and "Ruth." Themes of feminine tasks, the suffering of women, and Victorian virtues are discussed.
