- Abstract
This study investigates the effects of sewage sludge from a municipal sewage treatment plant used for irrigation and fertilizer of almond trees planted on the island of Kos in the southeastern Aegean Sea, Greece. Prior to this study, there were concerns about bioaccumulation of heavy metals. However, the examination of wood tissues, leaves, fruits and young stems found no evidence of toxic materials or traces of heavy metals above European Committee Directives. These analyses were compared with samples of soil substrate, sewage sludge and wastewater. Ripe almonds were also collected and analyzed using energy dispersive x-ray microanalysis and scanning electron microscopy.
