- Abstract
This article discusses the use of acoustic tags and bottom-moored recorders to study the impulsive sounds produced by humpback whales during surface active behavior. The study combines data from passive acoustic monitoring (PAM) and instrumented suction cup tags to gain insights into humpback whale behavior and communication. The impulsive sounds were found to be associated with surface-active behaviors such as tail slaps and pectoral fin slaps. The presence of these impulsive sounds in PAM data can provide valuable information about the occurrence and activity of humpback whales in a monitored area.
