- Abstract
The article discusses the extent of the recognition of academic freedom as a constitutional right in the U.S. Reasons why the U.S. courts have not given more respect to the claims of academic freedom are mentioned. Definition of academic freedom set forth by different academic authorities is given. The opinions through which academic freedom is recognized as a constitutional right by the U.S. Supreme Court are given. It is mentioned that the legal status of the teacher as a state employee is a formidable impediment to the judicial protection of academic freedom and academic tenure.
