- Title
"Reconstruction" vs. "Palliative Relief" In American Jewish Overseas Work (1919-1939).
- Authors
Szajkowski, Zosa
- Abstract
The article considers the attempts of the Joint Distribution Committee (JDC) and local Jewish leaders in the U.S. to organize a central co-operative Jewish bank overseas to serve as a supervisory body for all reconstruction work involving loans. The JDC organized local and regional co-operatives known as kassas in different countries and traditional free loan societies in Poland. In Poland, it was extremely difficult to obtain permission from the Ministry of Finance, but a provisional committee for a central bank was finally organized on May 31, 1920. The JDC did not encounter such difficulties in organizing central co-operative banks in other countries.
