- Abstract
Researchers examining the translation of news stories have found that these translations typically employ acculturation practices such as summary, paraphrase, addition, omission, re-formulation rather than direct translation which retains the word order and sentence patterns of the source text (Bassnett, 2005: 125). Within the narrative theory framework, Mona Baker (2006) has noted that addition and omission in news translation may also be used as tools to construct a narrative in the target text which is significantly different to the source. This paper aims at giving some preliminary descriptions of the current practice of news translation in Serbia based on a qualitative analysis of the Brexit-related news during December 2016, which is then compared to the strategies appearing in two control samples. The qualitatively analysed corpus is comprised of eight English and six Serbian paired news stories published by the Tanjug news agency. The two control samples analysed quantitatively contain 23 paired original and translated news stories each. They differ in that one contains pairs of translated news on Brexit collected during a longer time interval of six months, while the other contains neutral news on anything but Brexit, collected during April 2018. The analysis of the control samples has confirmed the conclusions of the qualitatively analysed original small corpus. The analysis of the translation strategies employed in transferring the news items selected for our corpus shows that the acculturation strategies employed within the Serbian context include literal translation of selected segments of the source news. Whereas Bassnett has found that literal translation does not appear in news translation, our analysis shows that the commonest strategy employed in Serbian translations of news about Brexit is direct translation and omission, with no change to the general message of the source news, or to the source text narrative. One explanation for the use of this strategy could be the predominantly equivalence- based view of translation held by the translators/journalists whose texts are analyzed in this paper, and another is that the topic of Brexit is not a subject which elicits conflicting narratives in EU/Serbia relations.
