- Abstract
Based on the information recorded in the National Folklore Survey of 1921 under the category "superstitions", in the files corresponding to schools in Córdoba, we recorded 431 mentions of omens corresponding to 41 animal ethnospecies. 17.63 % of the omens were climatic, 34.8 % auspicious and 47.5 % dire. Such omens can be related to both Hispanic and American traditions, and modeled by the condition of the settlers as ranchers. These perceptions, although diminishing, continue to this day, possibly because they respond to idiosyncratic ways of interpreting the nature-culture duality. Hispanic and native roots can be recognized in them. The zoo-semiotic transmutation is the mechanism that best explains the omens offered by animals to the Creoles of Córdoba a century ago, we cannot completely rule out the existence of ecological interpretations or intersubjective communications. The existence of omens would allow to order and give certainty to a reality that is often hostile and complex to unravel.
