- Title
"Aren't These Boy Books?": High School Students' Readings of Gender in Graphic Novels.
- Authors
Moeller, Robin A.
- Abstract
The article discusses the role of gender in the reading of graphic novels by teenagers. It examines the author's experience of being a school library media specialist who notices that the majority of graphic novel readers in the school were male. The author presents information on the portrayal of graphic novels in the mass media and the perception of female students that graphic novels and manga books are written for boys. The author then argues that absolutes associated with reading and biological sex do not exist and presents information from research studies examining the fluid nature of gender in light of reading and literacy.
