- Abstract
The article discusses approaches to teaching English learners (ELs) and struggling students the reading and writing skills necessary to pass the growing number of high school exit exams in the U.S. The author explains methods educators can use to help students develop analytical skills they can apply to standardized tests, such as the California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE), and demonstrates several cognitive instructional methods, including the scaffolding strategy. The results from a study of how these methods affected EL test scores and several tables illustrating data and statistics from the text are also provided.
