- Abstract
The article profiles a class taught to adolescent girls concerning poetry and photography. The author focuses on how the students used language and literacy to understand sociopolitical issues and to address the so-called politics of silencing within schools. The author discusses the recurring theme in the students' work of a desire to establish themselves as individuals and a discussion about a student protest of the United States war in Iraq. The author also includes selections of student poetry.
