- Abstract
The article presents a discussion of the non-required reading habits of adolescents living in urban areas. The authors focuses on students in a northeastern United States middle school with a predominantly Latino and African American population where reading proficiency was found to be largely below average. Students at the school were given a survey asking about their out of school reading habits. The authors also discuss student attitude toward reading, types of materials read, and where students got their reading materials.
