- Abstract
The article examines the context of gothicism and the early modern historical ethnography in Europe. It presents the Scandinavian interpretation which has been allowed to dominate a much broader Gothic tradition that encompassed a broad part of the continent. It emphasizes that the debates on Gothicism is remarkable for the various approaches to historical writing applied by scholars. The problems associated with the study of the early-modern view of Gothicism and the classical sources underlying legends are discoursed.
