- Title
Designing HIV Prevention Interventions for Urban American Indians: Evolution of the Don't Forget Us Program.
- Authors
Wiechelt, Shelly A.; Gryczynski, Jan; Johnson, Jeannette L.
- Abstract
The article discusses how researchers used the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration's (SAMHSA) Strategic Prevention Framework (SPF) to develop HIV/AIDS prevention services to urban American Indians populations. The authors believe that the increase in health disparities among American Indians and Alaska Natives is due to high rates of sexual transmitted diseases, sociocultural factors and socioeconomic disadvantages. The "Don't Forget Us" program, which provides substance abuse, HIV/AIDS and hepatitis prevention services, was implemented in a community-based substance abuse and mental health service provider. The authors discuss the structure of the "Don't Forget Us" program, and reports on the vital importance of community support for successful prevention services.
