- Abstract
Introduction: A patient’s health status must be assessed through multiple parameters, tooth loss, as a consequence of oral diseases, being an important one. Studies in the literature have shown that complete tooth loss is seriously affecting patient’s quality of life. Case presentation: The case presented here is of a 77 years old female patient wanting to change both her old complete dentures, almost exclusively motivated by social and psychological reasons, rather than functional ones. The accentuated atrophy of both maxillae, the lost vertical dimension of occlusion, the poor state of the mucosa in key areas and the high esthetic expectations of the patient represented a challenge for the success of the prosthetic restoration. Besides fulfilling all the functional criteria and treatment steps, special attention was given to the wax-up and mock-up phases, teeth arrangement, gingival morphology, comparison between the actual appearance and old pictures and patient’s full acceptance of the result, before fabricating the dentures. Conclusions: In this case, meeting the esthetic expectations of the patient was the key for the treatment’s success; the fact that the new dentures pleased her overcame their existent functional qualities and played a leading role in the satisfactory outcome.
