- Abstract
This article discusses research on the effects of arsenic species on cyanobacterial growth and toxin yields to assess the ecological risk of blooms that threaten to pollute global water supplies. The correlation between cyanobacteria and arsenate has been linked to the structural similarities of arsenate and phosphate. The arsenate tolerance of a specific microcystin strain was examined. The researchers provided evidence that microcystins may in fact be impacted by by arsenate if it is present in algal blooms.
