- Abstract
This research is conducted to determine general structural characteristics and current situation of cattle breeding enterprises in Igdir province a questionnaire is applied to 162 enterprise owners in the research. Obtained data are subjected to X² (chi-square) analyses and presented in percentages. The mean age of the owners is found as 44.9±1.0. The mean land property of the enterprises is 86.5±5.7 decares, 74.8±4.1 decares of which consist of irrigated lands while 11.7±3.8 decares are dry agricultural lands. Numbers of cattle per enterprise are determined as 20.9±1.3 head. 84% of the producers have traditional barns while the remaining 16% have modern barns. 88.3% of the barns are closed-system barns while 3.7% and 8.0% have corral-typeand shed barns. Concrete (bricks, etc.) is used in the construction of 53.7% of the barns in the region while stone + mud bricks are used in 31.5%. Only stone is used in the construction of 12.4% and only mud bricks used in 2.4%. 74.1% of the breeders keep records while the remaining 25.9% do not keep records. 82.1% of the breeders are registered with a breeders' organization. Milking is made by mobile milking machines in 54.3% of the enterprises. Milking is made by hand in 38.3% of the enterprises, while it is made by milking unit in 1.9% and by hand + mobile milking machine in 5.6%. 80.8% of the enterprises carry out udder cleaning. As a result, it is determined that the breeders have sufficient knowledge on animal care and nutrition and adequate land for breeding. Thus, the breeders should be encouraged for establishment of modern enterprises.
