- Abstract
The article discusses Gertrude Stein's monumental novel The Making of Americans as acritique of conceptualizations of Americanization as assimilation and links the novel withHenry James' The American Scene (1907) where James also expressed doubts about thevalidity of dominant explanations of Americanization. As demonstrated by an analysis ofthe introductory passage of The Making of Americans, Stein treats Americanization as theeffect of a transgenerational narrative. This narrative obliges the second and third generationto follow their (grand-)parents' ideas of becoming American and engenders a modernprocess of social mimesis which for Stein possesses structural similarities with series production.
