- Title
Freshwater protected areas: Can we expand our options to include private wetlands?
- Authors
Finlayson, Max
- Abstract
The article discusses Kingsford and Nevill's guest editorial in the December 2005 issue of the "Ecological Management & Restoration" journal, which explored some additional dimensions of conserving freshwater areas through the sustainable use of ecosystem services. Kingsford and Nevill point out that protected areas provide many values that extend far beyond the borders of the freshwater ecosystem itself and that effective protection of freshwater ecosystems will require greater attention to landscape approaches whereby protected areas maximize biodiversity conservation from a reserve system that comprises a relatively small part of the landscape.
