- Abstract
The article reports on a study that was conducted in Edinburgh, Scotland, and Manila, the Philippines, to examine the affect of oral contraceptives on a user's sexuality and sense of well-being. For the study, 75 women who were protected from pregnancy by their sterilization, were selected from each city. They were assigned a combined pill which contained estrogen and progestogen, a progestogen-only pill or a placebo for four months. Through interviews, and questionnaires related to side effects and diaries of these women, it was found that sexual interest and the frequency of sexual activity among women in Edinburgh were adversely affected by the intake of combined pills. However, progestogen-only pills did not affect sexuality in Manila and also reduced depression in Edinburgh.
