Rediscovering the language of Classical and Romantic performance.
- Authors
Brown, Clive
- Abstract
The article discusses the historical evidence available concerning Classical and Romantic musical performance as of February 2013. The author points to the recordings of music originally written by composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart by pianist Carl Reinecke to illustrate the features of Mozart's music to modern listeners and musicians. The article discusses the use of continuous vibrato, portamento, and overall tempo in modern performances of Classical and Romantic music. The author argues that contemporary classical musicians must become innovative in communicating with the public, become engaged with the historical evidence of classical and romantic musical performance, and play creatively in order to make Classical and Romantic music culturally significant.
