- Abstract
Background: Diagnosis of malocclusions in the transverse plane is a challenge. There are yet no criteria defining a normal transverse occlusion. The aim of this study was to determine the transverse arch width ratio in class I,II and III patients reporting for orthodontic treatment. Materials & Methods: A total of 212 patients who reported for orthodontic treatment were enrolled. The measurements were made using a scale on the photographs and the values were converted into ratios. The canine ratios were divided into 4 groups and molar ratios were divided into 5 groups. Results: Out of 212 patients, the age of 46.7% of the patients ranged from 18 to 30yrs, 25% of the patients ranged from 31 to 50yrs, 10.8% of the patients was above 50yrs of age group, 10.3% of patients ranged from 14 to 17yrs and 7% of the patients ranged from 9 to 13yrs. 56.6% of the patients had class I dental malocclusion, 37.7% of the patients had class II dental malocclusion and 5.6% of the patients had class III dental malocclusion. Conclusion: Both class II and Class III patients have expanded transverse arch width ratios in the region of the canines and molars.
